If you read our post on what happens to your gut after a course of antibiotics, you already know the basics: microbial diversity drops, recovery takes time, and what you eat during that window matters. This post is the practical follow-up. Below, we go over four recipes designed around foods that support microbiome recovery, so you have something concrete to make when you finish your last pill.
Each recipe below hits at least one of the three pillars of post-antibiotic gut support: prebiotic fiber to feed recovering bacteria, fermented foods to reintroduce live beneficial microorganisms, and resistant starch to produce short-chain fatty acids that help maintain gut barrier integrity.
Overnight Oats with Banana, Flaxseed, and Kefir
Why it works: Oats are among the richest sources of beta-glucan, a prebiotic fiber that selectively feeds beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium, which is one of the first microbial groups to be hit during antibiotic treatment (1). Banana adds fructooligosaccharides, another prebiotic fiber. Kefir provides live cultures without requiring any cooking, preserving the microorganisms. Flaxseed adds omega-3s and additional fiber. This one also requires zero effort the night you make it, which is convenient when you’re recovering from whatever sent you to the doctor in the first place.

Prep time: 5 minutes + overnight
Ingredients:
- ½ cup rolled oats
- ½ cup plain kefir
- ¼ cup water
- 1 ripe banana, sliced
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
- 1 tsp honey
- Optional: a handful of blueberries (polyphenol bonus)
Instructions:
- Combine oats, kefir, and water in a jar or bowl and stir well.
- Top with sliced banana, flaxseed, and honey.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight.
- In the morning, stir, add blueberries if using, and eat cold straight from the jar.
Note: Eat cold or at room temperature, since heat will destroy the live cultures in the kefir.
White Bean and Garlic Soup
Why it works: White beans are exceptionally high in resistant starch and prebiotic fiber, both of which feed gut bacteria and promote butyrate production in the colon (2). Garlic is one of the most potent prebiotic foods available. Its fructans feed beneficial bacteria directly. Leeks add inulin, another well-studied prebiotic fiber. This soup is also easy on digestion, which matters when your gut is sensitive post-antibiotics.

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 cans white beans (cannellini), drained and rinsed
- 1 medium leek, white and light green parts sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 4 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth
- 1 tsp fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of olive oil to finish
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a medium pot over medium heat. Add leek and cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
- Add garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add beans, broth, and thyme. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes.
- Use an immersion blender to partially blend — leaving some beans whole gives a good texture.
- Season with salt, pepper, and lemon. Serve warm.
Make a batch and refrigerate leftovers. Cooled and reheated beans develop more resistant starch than freshly cooked ones.
Cold Sesame Noodle Bowl with Edamame and Shredded Cabbage
Why it works: Pasta and noodles cooked and then cooled are a surprisingly effective source of resistant starch. The cool-down process converts digestible starch into a form that feeds gut bacteria rather than being absorbed in the small intestine (3). Edamame adds plant protein and fiber. Raw cabbage contributes both prebiotic fiber and, when fermented (see below), beneficial bacteria. But even raw it supports microbial diversity. This one also works well as a make-ahead lunch, which means it’s already cold by the time you eat it.

Prep time: 15 minutes + cooling time
Ingredients:
For the bowl:
- 6 oz soba noodles or whole wheat noodles
- 1 cup shelled edamame (frozen, thawed)
- 1 cup shredded red or green cabbage
- 2 green onions, sliced
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- Optional: a spoonful of kimchi on the side (fermented bonus)
For the dressing:
- 2 tbsp tahini
- 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup
- 1–2 tbsp warm water to thin
Instructions:
- Cook noodles according to package directions. Drain, rinse with cold water, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight).
- Whisk together all dressing ingredients until smooth.
- Toss cold noodles with edamame, cabbage, green onion, and dressing.
- Top with sesame seeds. Add a spoonful of kimchi on the side if you have it.
Yogurt Parfait with Roasted Oats, Pomegranate, and Honey
Why it works: Plain yogurt with live active cultures is one of the most accessible and well-studied fermented foods for post-antibiotic recovery, specifically for restoring Lactobacillus populations (4). Pomegranate seeds are rich in polyphenols that act as prebiotics, selectively feeding beneficial bacteria. Lightly toasted oats add prebiotic beta-glucan without the heat exposure that would affect the yogurt’s live cultures. This one works as a breakfast or a snack and comes together in under five minutes.

Prep time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
- ¾ cup plain whole milk yogurt with live active cultures
- ¼ cup rolled oats, lightly toasted in a dry pan
- 3 tbsp pomegranate seeds (or a handful of any dark berry)
- 1 tsp honey
- Optional: 1 tbsp chopped walnuts
Instructions:
- Toast oats in a dry skillet over medium heat for 3–4 minutes, stirring frequently, until golden and fragrant. Let cool completely.
- Layer yogurt in a bowl or jar.
- Top with cooled oats, pomegranate seeds, walnuts if using, and a drizzle of honey.
- Eat immediately.
Quick note: add the toasted oats only once they’ve fully cooled. Adding anything warm directly to yogurt will kill the live cultures.
